The modernization of Japan began here in Satsuma
Here in Satsuma, the first place to open its eyes to the wide outside world and understand the international situation during the 200 years of isolationism of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Japan's first western style ships and warships were produced. The production of weaponry such as cannons and fine crafts such as the cut glass "Satsuma Kiriko" were also fostered. All this was made possible through policies of strengthening the military, enriching the country and increasing industry.
These policies played a major role in the restructuring of the country with the change from shogunate rule to the Meiji government, following which the crucial sources of support to Japan's economic system of the production of iron, textiles, and ships each underwent industrialization.
