Japanese
Critical turning points for Japan
In the Edo period,(1600-1868), the administration of the Satsuma clan included the Kingdom of Ryukyu (now Okinawa Prefecture), meaning that an area covering 1,200km north to south was under Satsuma influence. From the 18th century to the 19th century, countries in North America and Europe were experiencing the industrial revolution. As a result, many countries wished for prodigious exporting countries and countries rich in raw materials, and developed military might to enable themselves to practice colonization. Isolationist Japan was no exception, and, driven by pressure from the naval forces of America and European countries, a complicated international problem developed along the lines of Asia versus the West.
